China: The One Child Policy

Parents were pleased to have their child’s picture taken. Only in Italy have I seen children so doted upon. At the time of my visit the one child policy was still in effect. Initiated in the late 1970’s the intent of this policy was to reduce the rapid population growth and it did succeed in reducing the fertility and birthrates and, thus, population growth. Unintended harmful consequences, such as skewing the sex ratio toward male, a shrinking workforce and a rapidly aging population, resulted in abandonment of the policy in 2016. Chinese are now allowed to have two children.
